BACKGROUND:

Sypha was born and raised in 15th century Wallachia, a fictional Eastern-European country. She is the granddaughter of the headman of a small tribe of Speakers, people who are nomadic and dedicated to helping the people of Wallachia when they can. Speaker tradition is based on oral storytelling and history; this includes some knowledge of future history and prophecy. Her folk can be trained in lore and become magic uses. Sypha is a magician, herself.

Wallachia is an alternate-universe Eastern European medieval country, complete with the dominance of the Catholic church over the countryside, with hysteria about witches well-established. Speakers, as unaffiliated with the church and magic-users, are often under suspicion of bringing evil to whatever community they are in, and tend to be scapegoated whenever ills befall the people around them. Representatives of the church are generally power-hungry, unethical, and unempathetic.

Two years prior to Sypha’s ‘Porting into the world of MoM, Lisa, the wife of Dracula, was burned at this stake. This was a terrible idea.

Dracula lost what little handle he had on sanity, rained fire from the skies, and gave Wallachians 1 year to repent of what they had done. This of course didn’t actually happen, so after 1 year was up, he unleashed “The Night Horde”; undead creatures of hellish mien who basically hunted and killed humans wherever they could be found.

According to Speaker legend, there was a savior of humanity sleeping below the city of Gresit; once he awoke, he would team up with a Hunter and a Scholar to defeat Dracula and return peace to Wallachia. So, in 1476, Sypha went to go find him, ran into a cyclops, and got herself turned to stone.

She was de-petrified by Trevor Belmont, who had come searching for her at her grandfather’s behest, and slew the cyclops, reversing the effects of its gaze. Sypha then promptly threw up.

Through a series of mishaps and angry pitchfork-wielding mobs, Sypha and Trevor ended up teaming up against the invading Night Horde, then falling into the catacombs under Gresit where, after much falling and evading breaking gears, they came upon the sleeping Soldier of legend. Except that he turned out to be the half-vampire son of Dracula, but he also wanted to stop his father’s genocidal rampage, so that worked out.

Sypha, Trevor, and Alucard team up to defeat Dracula, and determine that anchoring his castle in place - his castle is a time-and-space-travelling mystery - is the first step to launching an attack on Dracula himself, and so they head to the old Belmont Estate to take advantage of its underground vault/library. The Belmonts had been fighting monsters for centuries until the church decided they didn’t like them and burned the house to the ground when Trevor was a child, but the secret vault was still untouched and in it was a wealth of knowledge. Sypha found a spell to fix Dracula’s castle to a certain place and, long story short, that happened - they stormed the castle (emptied due to infighting amongst vampire factions), confronted Dracula, and Trevor and Sypha got their butts summarily kicked. Alucard ended up being the one that Dracula allowed to stake him as he turned out to be pretty consumed by grief over his wife’s death and sickened by the world at large.

Sypha, who has the travellers’ itch, wanted to be on the move afterwards and asked Trevor to accompany her, while Alucard took charge of the now-stationary castle and the adjacent Belmont library.

Basically, the first two seasons of Castlevania on Netflix.

In the third season, which this Sypha is unaware of, things get super nasty and complicated BUT importantly she and Trevor are revealed to be hooking up, and Alucard is so lonely without Trevor and Sypha that he makes doll replicas of them to talk to, so …. The trio are pretty tight, at this point.

PERSONALITY:

Sypha is upbeat, cheerful, and has a wicked sense of humour. She does not suffer fools lightly - as the magician of her tribe, she is used to bearing heavy responsibility at a young age and does not have much patience with people who are not as emotionally mature as she is. Thus, her initial intense dislike of Trevor Belmont. Despite that, she is kind and altruistic, and really truly does want to help people; despite her life of persecution for being a Speaker, she has a lot of compassion for other human beings. She loves learning, has a taste for adventure, and is completely adamant about her own righteousness.

Sypha at this point in canon is riding high after defeat of the legendary Dracula: she is coming into her own, power-wise, and the whole reason that Dracula could be defeated in the first place was because of her ability to use magic to halt Dracula’s castle and affix it to a certain place. Because she is a Speaker and used to the nomadic lifestyle, she does not want to stay in one place for too long. After Dracula’s defeat, she is eager to reunite with her grandfather’s tribe and tell her story to add to the Speakers’ collective knowledge and oral history. She did admit, while going through books in the Belmont vault, that she can see the benefit of writing history down, so she is rethinking that facet of Speaker tradition (direct quote: “I am coming to the conclusion that my people are idiots, and we SHOULD have written everything down.”)

POWER:

Speaker magician (canon)
Includes: pyrokinesis, cryokinesis, aerokinesis

Sypha can conjure flame, anything from a small ball to light her way to a pointed missile to a roaring wall of it; she can also manipulate it even if she has not generated it - ie, causing a flame-spewing beast to choke and explode on its own fire that she halts in its chest. She can also conjure ice in almost any form, usually using it as a projectile weapon, but able to also use it as a wall, as ice underfoot, and she can also freeze existing water (including holy water). She usually uses her aerokinesis to cushion falls, to right objects about to topple, or as a dramatic flair.

Speaker knowledge (canon)
Includes: knowledge of history (with an emphasis on Wallachia), knowledge of Dracula, knowledge of the Church and matters of religion (Speakers acknowledge god but do not worship him), knowledge of the Speaker tradition specifically, knowledge of lost/obscure languages, knowledge of prophecy / “future history”, ability to learn and wield new spells, and ability to counter and attack other magic-users

This will be mostly useless in-game, but gives her some… transferable skills? She can research like nobody’s business, and is quick to learn new techniques.

Anime Protagonist Durability (canon)
Includes: Tough physicality, enhanced endurance, light on her feet

Sypha is fairly durable; if she is punched she will probably impale the offender on a spike of ice, and then react to the hurt after taking care of business. She does bleed, but tends to ignore her wounds in favour of keeping at whatever attack she is making until it is complete or she is physically unable to continue. She isn’t made of rubber, but she’s survived falls that would definitely maim regular humans *at least*.

FINAL NOTES:
Sypha has a Spanish (ish - Medieval Iberian, most likely) accent. She also has a significant wound on her shoulder where Dracula’s claws dug in when he threw her across the room in their final fight; she herself cauterized it mid-fight so she could continue to help her comrades, but it oozed blood for a few days afterwards. When she arrives it is scabbed over and itchy under the bandages; she has to be careful how she moves her arm.
